When a trap trigger says “a mage inflicts damage” does the damage have to originate from the mage’s figure?

Some spells or defenses have a trigger stating “when a mage would inflict damage”; is this trigger only satisfied when the damage originates from the mage’s model, or can an evocation or room based attack satisfy it, if a mage was the one causing the damage to occur?

The only damage that applies to this rule is if the mage casts a direct spell on you or hits you with an attack.
The third and final way the trigger works is that if a mage activates a room that does damage, the damage is considered inflicted by that mage.
